Runway protection prevents the total load from surpassing the runway columns’ structural limits within a designated runway zone by controlling the movements of multiple cranes and preventing hoisting overload (overload protection). It is a way to ensure that operators, equipment, and buildings are totally protected against runway collapse, without unnecessarily compromising the flexibility of the crane movements.
With runway protection, full functionality is incorporated into the cranes and hoists. A master i-C4C is installed on each crane and a slave i-C4Cs on each hoist, connected with each other through a CAN cable. The hoist i-C4C provides overload protection based on the information from a load cell and from the master i-C4C. The i-C4Cs on the cranes control crane motion based on the load value from its own hoist, the distance from other cranes measured by laser sensors, and load values communicated by the other cranes. The cranes communicate with each other through a radio frequency (RF) connection.
